What is Ellinomatheia?

Ellinomatheia is a certificate of attainment in Greek as a foreign/second language issued by the Centre for the Greek Language, under the Hellenic Ministry of Education. The certification covers listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Tests are taken once annually and the certificate is broken down into levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2, with A1 being Elementary and C2 Highly Advanced. It is recognized by various institutions in Greece, the European Union, and around the world for a wide range of purposes relating to employment, residency, and education.

In the US, the Ellinomatheia certificate is connected to the Seal of Biliteracy which certifies a student has attained fluency in a foreign language which may aid in applying for entry at public Colleges and Universities. As of Oct 18, 2019, the Ellinomatheia Certificate of Attainment in Greek has been incorporated in the Seal of Biliteracy program in the District of Columbia, and the States of Illinois, Maryland, California, Ohio, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, and N. Jersey.
