The Olympic Games are more than just the biggest sporting event in the world – they have so much to teach us; they’re a true gift of Hellenism to the world!
From ancient Olympia to the present day, the Olympic Games have inspired people to become the best version of themselves and to value respect and fairness. They’ve also taught us that peace can prevail for people to compete in sporting events where their effort is praised no matter where they come from.
Why it’s important for kids
The Olympic spirit is more than just winning medals and becoming a champion. It’s about giving it your best and believing in fair play. That’s why when children engage in the values of the Olympic Games and Hellenism, they can benefit in every facet of their life.
Parents strive to pass on these timeless values to their kids as they are the building blocks for success and happiness in life, especially in an era of questionable idols and morals targeted at kids. That’s why it’s more important than ever to give kids narratives that inspire them and serve their healthy development
How to inspire a kid to be a hero today
Kids find inspiration in Olympic spirit in our themed collection Field Trip to the Olympics featuring lots of fun activities and an exciting virtual trip video with footage of ancient Olympia - the site of the first Olympics, and the Kallimarmaro and OAKA stadiums in Athens. During the trip, kids learn about Heracles – the mythical founder of the Olympics, the importance the Games had in ancient Greece, and the incredible story of long-distance runner Spiros Louis who won the gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 1896.
At Ellinopoula, the Olympic spirit is just one aspect of our rich curriculum. Timeless Hellenic values are found throughout the platform, like Aesop’s Fables where kids learn that being humble and hard-working is the key to success, and likewise that the easy way doesn’t lead to glory. Similarly, in the episode “Track and Field” of Petros & Mythology, the young protagonist, Petros, questions the fairness of Heracles taking part in track and field events, him being a demigod.
It’s no coincidence Mission Odyssey is one of our most popular series on the platform - kids witness Odysseus exemplifying courage, intellect, and loyalty, rather than brute strength, and recognize that those traits are the key to becoming a hero.
